Calculate the engagement rate of a TikTok video or account. TikTok engagement is usually measured against views, because most views come from the For You feed rather than followers, but you can switch to followers too.
Example: a video with 1,800 likes, 64 comments, 95 shares and 140 saves has 2,099 interactions. With 30,000 views, its engagement rate by views is 2,099 ÷ 30,000 × 100 = 7.00%. On an account with 25,000 followers, engagement by followers would be 8.40%.
Views or followers: which should you use?
On TikTok, most views of a video can come from people who do not follow you, so dividing by followers can give odd results: a viral video can show an engagement rate above 100% of followers. Engagement by views measures how people who actually watched reacted, which makes it the fairer way to compare videos.
Brands sometimes ask for both. Use by views to judge content and by followers when someone wants to compare accounts of different sizes.
What counts as good engagement on TikTok?
Engagement varies by niche, format and audience size, and it changes as TikTok changes its feed. The most useful comparison is with your own previous videos: calculate the rate for your last 10–20 videos and look at what the top performers have in common.
Ways to raise engagement on TikTok
Hook in the first second. Show the result or the problem before any introduction.
Give people a reason to comment, such as a question with a clear answer or a choice between two options.
Make videos worth saving and sharing: tutorials, lists and how-tos.
Reply to comments with video replies, which also gives you new content.
Post consistently and compare formats using the same formula.
Add likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by views and multiply by 100. 2,099 interactions on 30,000 views is a 7% engagement rate.
Why use views instead of followers on TikTok?+
Many TikTok views come from the For You feed, not from followers. Dividing by views measures the reaction of people who actually watched.
Do shares count more than likes?+
In the formula, every interaction counts equally. Many creators still watch shares and saves closely, because they show that people valued the video enough to keep or pass it on.
Can engagement rate be over 100%?+
By followers, yes, if a video reaches many non-followers. By views it almost never exceeds 100%, which is another reason to use views on TikTok.
How do I find my TikTok engagement for the whole account?+
Add up interactions and views across your last 10–20 videos and divide total interactions by total views.
